Discussion»Statements»Rosie's Corner» How many "great" ideas turn out to be anything but? Why can't we recognize awful before the fact rather than always after the fact?
Somethings sound great "on paper" ... but fail in the execution.
I think the largest example is Communism. It sounds great on paper ... everybody cooperating to provide the needs of everyone. But in practice, it never works on a large scale.
Utopia too Walt! Living in communes. There have been many that tried it but I think it's never been a long-term success anywhere. Thank you for your reply. The design is great but when you try to build you find that a structural member goes right through where the toilet should be. Back to the drawing board! :)
Have you read Utopia, Rosie? I did. It was fun as an exercise in philosophy ... but I quickly saw the problems, once I thought about it.
I mean, the part where everybody swaps roles from city to agriculture every 6 months? Sure, "walk in the other's shoes" and all that. But how much training would that take, to cover 2 jobs of such widely varying skill sets?
Or the part where the "peaceful society" will go to war if they believe their neighbor country isn't using resources appropriately?
I did not Walt. There was some sort of Utopian community long ago I think out in the desert. Some famous author wrote about it. I'll hafta Google it to let you know whom it was. People have tried for ever so long to live in harmony and peaceful co-existence in a community where ALL is shared. Hasn't worked out. Thank you for your reply. I'll get back on this thread when I find out whom it was! :) Back again! It was ALDOUS HUXLEY and the commune was LLANO DEL RIO, a Socialist colony in the Antelope Valley incorporated in 1913. It started off great. It was abandoned in 1918. They even had a Montessori school on the premises during its heydey! Some things can never be but it's nice that we keep thinking them up, hoping they will and trying them on for size! :)
