Survival of the fittest. Basic needs. One seems to be a deep-seated need to be thought of as "better than". Is that inborn or outborn?
Is it in our DNA? Is it our parents who tell use how wonderful we are and how we be far better than any other? Why do we believe that crap when we can clearly see it isn't true? I don't get it.
Our selfishness comes from our basic will to live, our survival instincts. We do what we have to to survive. Part of which is learning to accept ourselves and being able to appreciate the best parts of ourselves. While this develops us socially to some extent it is all related to our self-interest. Which is why we need religion to see things more wholistically, in terms of others trying to survive as well besides ourselves and realize they are no different from us and to embrace them and help them. Respect for others.
