We know his peeps are stuck like glue to him. It's all the unpeeps who don't believe him. He can say and do whatever he wants and NO ONE CARES! His peeps are his forever more through thick and thin and beyond. His unpeeps despise him and everything he says/does/represents. He talks to brick walls for all the good it does him. He can't not.
