Do the expectations of others shape whom we become? If nothing is expected of you are you less than you would have been if something were?

Normally we don't want to disappoint those we love who love us. But abnormally some folks keep pushing the envelope testing to see how far they can go and get away with it. The more you try to get away with things the greater you become or the lesser? How does that work?
