Why are non-citizens allowed to join the military and fight our wars and die for us? If they don't die, they get deported. WHAT?

I do not know if that scenario is APOCRYPHAL or actual. But allegedly some non-citizens have joined and been deployed and fought and survived and come home BADLY DAMAGED due to their war experiences and were DEPORTED. If untrue that is a CRUEL EVIL horror story. If TRUE WHAT SAY YOU?
