HEALTH WARNING. PLEASE PAY ATTENTION! Any of you ever get any cortisone or other steroid injections?

Did you know there is a connection between those injections' side effects that can lead to  death?

"Steroid injections into the spine can cause partial or total paralysis, brain damage, stroke and even death"

"Strokes tied to tainted steroid injections " pertaining to treatment for Plantar Fascitis

On Thursday Jim had a cortisone shot in his heel to alleviate the pain from plantar fascitis. On Saturday he had a stroke.

When his friend phoned him to chat while Jim was in the hospital Jim told him about the shot and that his heel wasn't hurting so they could resume playing golf. Then his friend told him that two days after he had a cortisone shot he had had a stroke! That was years before they met. His friend's stroke was so bad he could no longer work and is on disability from it.
His friend Alan wondered if there were a connection. So did we so I researched it.

Out of the blue Jim had a stroke on Saturday. After a zillion tests and many interviews, all of which he passed with flying colors he is back home WITH NO RESTRICTIONS AT ALL! He can drive. He can keep his appointment today with his weekly gym trainer. No diet restrictions other than common sense which has been our diet for years! Now an 83-year-old suffers a stroke and two days later comes home WITH NO RESTRICTIONS tells you that he didn't do anything wrong. It was not his lifestyle or diet that was to blame. Am I 100% CERTAIN of that? NO. Nothing in life is 100% certain. BUT I think it is a highly likely cause so no more steroids ever again for any reason.

Wanna hear something scary? We asked one of the neurosurgeons that question after the conversation with Jim's friend. "Can  a cortisone or other steroid shot trigger a stroke".

Genius idiot said there is no chance at all that a steroid injection could ever cause a stroke with 100% certainty. I guess he never researched it. How would you like him to take care of you? Me too neither. NOT AT ALL!
Just thought I"d share that with you. The weekend sucked bigtime. I think it was a warning. We are paying attention to it. I hope you will too.

In 2011 the FDA established the “Safe Use Initiative” to help those who perform these procedures develop methods to minimize the risk of neurologic events. In 2014 the FDA ruled that all glucocorticoid injections must have a label warning users of neurologic risk.

Clearly the neurosurgeon did not read that Walt. My point is how can the public protect itself against ignorant professionals in whom they place their lives? I appreciate the link but I am not the person who is the target. Health care professionals should all know that. You make it sound as if that information is out there and those who need to know know so  it's no big deal. They do not know. They are ignorant. In addition I would think an 83-year-old is different from a 35 year old who may well tolerate steroids. Thank you for your reply and the link.

Technically, we're supposed to be familiar with the MSDS information of all chemicals we work with.
I know (from our cancer center) that they have to be up-to-date on the latest information on those chemicals.

I don't know how one would ensure their doctor is up-to-date ... unless the doctor actually handed out copies of the latest information.
Which isn't a bad idea, considering all the fine print warnings they put on drugs these days - you have to have a magnifying glass to read the label, the print is so small.

I would guess the millennial generation would look it up, since they are so computer literate.
But there's the stereotype that ANY symptoms or side effects you look up online go to cancer.

I am thankful that he is ok.  That is a scary thing to have to go through.

Despite what anyone may say (doctor or not), there is ALWAYS a chance of having a problem (side effect?) with any drug.  NOTHING is 100% "safe"!!   If the risk of having a certain side effect is extremely small , most doctors won't tell you about them.  Sometimes the benefit outweighs the risk.  Sometimes they don't want to alarm their patients (just the fear of that .000001% can be stressful to some patients).

My fear of needles has minimized my having to get steroid or cortisone shots.  Seems doctors don't want their patients screaming and fainting in the office (bad for business?).
