I am not a haggler either. I do have my own business and yes there are some people who just are not happy unless the get some kind of a discount...I do have a discount for them of course they have to buy enough to qualify for the discount.

I haggle when I go to garage sales or when in Mexico.  It's pretty much expected both places. Oh yeah, another place I love to haggle is when purchasing a vehicle from a dealership.  A friend of mine always takes me with her when she's looking for a car.

That sounds very fair and reasonable m2c.  It's better for both the owner and the consumer. I like it when everyone wins . It embarrasses me to see others haggle.  Jim tells me it is all part of the game and everyone who plays enjoys it. Not me. Isn't  it funny how  we (you and I) don't engage in it but apparently lots of others do ? I wonder how many folks are like us m2c and how many are like my Jim?  I have to walk away when he starts in. He  always asks if there is a senior discount for starters. Or if it is floor model is there a discount available. Things like that. He is very soft-spoken and has a kindly demeanor. Now he is 80 and I'm 78 and I guess there is nothing wrong with doing that but I can't even do that. He is very charming and folks like him right off the bat. I can't say that is true for me. Thank you for your reply m2c! :)

My Jim says it is expected and part of the game and everyone who plays enjoys it. I never got the knack. It embarrasses me. I never even ask if there is a senior discount. Jim always starts off with that. Then he asks if a floor model might be discounted and then he's ask "is that the best you can do?" but he does it so sweetly and gently that sometimes they will give him a sales price from the week before that applied! I've witnessed it with my own eyes. He is very good at it. I'm not so I just kinda look down or walk away and let him handle it. I have no idea why it is so embarrassing for me. Maybe because when I was a kid I was painfully shy so I didn't want to be noticed? I dunno. Anyway thank you for your answer  PC and Happy Thursday to thee. If we were neighbors I'd definitely invite you along when I go shopping. I'd let you do all the talking of course! :)

Hi Rosie, sometimes, depending on what I'm buying and if it's a substantial amount, I'll ask if there's a discount for paying cash. The last item was a shed for the farm equipment that was over $5000. So you wouldn't haggle when you buy vehicles either? What that means is you are probably paying thousands of dollars more than necessary. When I went with my friend, she wanted this used van for $32,000. After I was done negotiating, we agreed on $23,000, but it took a few hours and I needed a nap when I was done. Lol. And when she got done signing all the paperwork and we walked out, we saw the salesman and thanked him and he never replied. I guess we dipped into his commission.

Does this work with new cars?

I bow to the altar of your talent PC. No sarcasm intended.  Once when I was buying my son a car when he went off to college what I did do was tell the salesman I wanted brand new tires on the car. I did that because it was my kid and I wanted him safe. The salesman didn't bat an eyelash. He put on 4 brand new tires!  That is about the only time I can ever remember asking for something. Now I really lucked out once. Years ago they were having a sale on Microwave ovens. They were kinda new and I wanted to get one. I screwed up though and missed the boat on the sale. They had a $500 microwave on sale for $400. So when I went in to buy it the sales person told me the sale had ended the day before.  I was walking away and he stopped me. He said "here's what I'll do for you. I will sell it to you for the sale price!" You will not believe what I said  but this is  how LAME I am. I said something like "I don't  want you to do something that will get you in trouble ". I did. I said that. He assured me he would not get in trouble. He had to convince me to accept the offer. Of course I bought it for $400. But through no talent of my own. Now honestly honey how lame is that?  Those are the only two things that  I can think of. So sure before Jim and I got together (he handles the car buying and major item purchases...I stay out of it) I paid whatever price was on the car. They were always used cars but I never once said "what can you do for me?". So congrats and keep up the good work! Thank you for your reply PC and Happy Friday to thee! :)

Most of my customers just pay the full price. Only a about 5% try for a discount. And about 1% seem to think I should give them something for free...those are the only ones who tend to get on my nerves but I try to simply pass it off as a funny.

  • Up to a point,  but I don't enjoy it.  If I think a price is fair I'll pay it.  If I don't, I won't.  That's about the extent of my bargaining skills.

Happily, other members of the family rejoice in doing this, so I let them enjoy themselves. :)

((hugs)) Ditto. I'm terrible at it. Jim is very good so he does all the talking when it comes to major purchases. I'm like you MrWitch. I find it very embarrassing to try to talk people down or whatever. Thank you for your reply and Happy Friday!  :)

I kinda think it is disrespectful to the owner too m2c. It implies that the item is overpriced to begin with so I wouldn't do it for that reason alone if no other. Once when Jim and I were out shopping years ago it was after Halloween and there was some Halloween-related items on sale. I saw a large ceramic jack-o-lantern. There was a chip on the green stem at the top but the top came off. I showed the chip to Jim and he said we could invert the top and the chip wouldn't show. He asked the sales person if we could have a discount because of the chip and she smiled and said "of course". I forget how much she discounted it but that jack-o-lantern is smiling at me as I write this. It stays out all year on one of our bookshelves. Just looking at it makes me smile.  I'm guessing in larger stores (which is where we bought it) they are used to people doing things like that. But smaller businesses like yours have less margin of profit. Anyway those who want something for free are insulting. How dare they? Thank you for your reply! Now if you have a sale that is "buy 1 get 1 free" I personally would love that! Just sayin'! :) ((hugs)) D'ya know many years ago when bellbottoms were popular there was store that had a massively good sale on Bongos I think. That was the brand I wore. BUY ONE GET TWO FREE! Honestly that's what the sale was. I bought 4 and got  8 free and those jeans lasted me for decades. In fact I still have one pair left that I wear on special occasion! I do. That was almost 40 years ago! I know. I am not hard on clothes! :)

DD, sure it does. You never go into a dealership and pay sticker price, unless you're filthy rich and can afford it. I don't think I'd even do it then. Dealerships have more of a markup on used cars though.

Rosie, that salesman thought he'd died and gone to heaven when you only wanted tires. Lol

I used to go with my mom and dad when they went car buying. My dad was a push over but my mom was a tough cookie. That's where I learned it from. When my friend was buying her van, after an hour or so with the salesman, we were at a "stalemate"so I told her lets just go so I got up and walked out with her right behind me saying she really wanted it and the salesman behind her. I told her not to worry that the van was hers. As we were starting to drive away, the salesman approached the car and I told him she wasn't interested in buying it at that price and we drove off. By the time we got back to her house, the salesman had left a message saying it was hers if she still wanted it, so she got her van. So the next time you're in the market for a vehicle, just let me know. Lol

Your microwave story was funny. If I was with you I'd have been jabbing my elbow into your side to get you to hush up. Haha

I know some people don't like dickering and there was a time I didn't like it. But it's a game I love to play especially when the stakes can be high.

OK sweetie. I'm gonna hold you to it PC. "So the next time you're in the market for a vehicle, just let me know." Thanks PC! It's good to have a tough cookie for a friend. I'm  mushy and squishy and that doesn't get you too far on you own! :)  Nifty stories of your escapades. Great resume! I'm sold on you! :)
