China manipulated its currency so that they remain cheaper.

When I was young everything was either made in Japan or made in the USA (and the USA stuff was usually of much better quality and lasted).
Because of  high wages (unions), retirement pots (union) and lack of domestic oil (cheaper to import), things  made outside the US became cheaper to purchase.  Japan soom dumped the "trinkets" in favor of manufacturing electronics and cars (due to their lack of resources this was much more profitable).  The imported stuff was junk compared to its US counterpart (meaning it didn't last), but since it was so cheap we could simply toss it when it broke and buy new.  As a result, we become a throwaway society.  Stuff made of plastic and pot metal became the rule.
The Asian markets were more than happy to provide those rich Americans with baubles and beads.  Americans gladly shelled out dollars to buy things that cost pennies to make.
Soon manufacturers in the US closed down and jobs were shipped "overseas".  Who needs US steel why chinese steel is cheaper.  Who needs US made cars when foreign ones are not only cheaper, but get better gas mileage (especially when there is an oil crisis).  What company wants to pay a US citizen minimum wage to man a call center when they can pay someone in India pennies a year to do the same thing?

Now here we are, unable to even imagine a world without all the "luxuries" we are surrounded with: deep fat fryers, seat warmers, TV's, cell phones, 7 coffee mugs (one for each day of the week, all imprinted with a funny saying), liposuction machines, XXXL clothing, breast implants, bobbleheads, ....    Then when our precious pipeline to these "necessities" is threatened, we wonder how will we ever survive?  Who will make our baubles, bangles, and beads?  We sure can't make them ourselves, as that would mean less money for upper management and shareholders (greed is the US's #1 endeavor).  Besides, we've forgotten how to make stuff.   We're consumers, not producers.

Where indeed will we find all the things that are currently made in China!   India?  Vietnam?  Mexico?  Laos?  Argentina?  Korea?  How can we survive without places like Walmart or Dollar General?  Woe is us (US?)
