I know there is a Caste system in India. I have heard there is one among African Americans. Is there also one among Latinos? Is being Mexican considered to be "less than" being Latin-American? Why?

The definition of LATINO is as follows

"A person of Latin-American or Spanish-speaking descent".

There is? I did not know that m2c. I have heard that among African Americans the lighter skinned among them are held in higher esteem which if true seems very sad to me. I think in India the Caste system is very rigid and if you are born in one considered to be low you can never work your way out of it.   Maybe I should ask that question. I wonder what the basis is  for a caste system in Asia? Maybe it's everywhere and we just don't hear about it so much. Thank you for your reply! :)

Rosie, darling, you need to expand your awareness of the world, starting with what the words mean. "Caste" is strictly an Indian tradition. It doesn't mean anything in any other country. "Latino" is a made-up word with no clear meaning except light brown skin and some trace of Spanish heritage. "African American" has to be considered a joke, a conflation of two continents applied to people who have never been outside the country. I have met some actual African-Americans, born in a country in Africa (did you know there are forty of those?) and naturalized American citizens, and every one of them was not only white but of Dutch descent. Then you throw in Mexicans, who are descended from the survivors of the meeting of Aztec mountain dwellers and Spanish murderers.  Please sort out this melange and explain what you are trying to get across.

For you additional edification, Africa is THIS BIG!
