I expect it's because of how you were raised. No disrespect intended here. When I was growing up my parents had a group of friends who took turns having parties. They all had kids so we were always going places or having the families come to ours. Probably at least once a month and during the summers we'd all go to the beach several times a month and having breakfast and lunch there! Everyone always brought something to the gathering when it was in someone's home. It could be wine or flowers or something homemade that they knew the hosts would like. I'd feel remiss if I didn't do that because of my upbringing. It could be a box of See's candy! That always went over very well! Or some homemade jams or pickles or a cake. Something. Now with respect to the wine we never expected it to be served that day. The hosts would have already planned what they wanted to serve. But sometimes they'd open it anyway and every adult present would enjoy a sip or two. Of course we always had the stereotypical "kids" table" and then the table for grownups. It was a very big deal when we graduated from the kids' table and were seated at the adult table. Thank you for your reply Shuhak! :)
