That is what they did in Texas, and it seems to have worked out pretty well. I have a bright idea: we could offer US citizenship to Mexicans, state by state, provided the state also switches allegiance. Then the country is entirely occupied by American citizens so there is nobody to conquer.

Rosie, have you ever noticed that your questions garner some of the lowest member participation rates on AnswerMug? If so, why do you suppose this might be so?

I've suggested a variation on the same theme for years--that the number of immigrants which each state takes should be left up to them.

In fact, the federal government is ONLY empowered (by the Constitution) to set uniform rules of naturalization once an immigrant gets here.  All other efforts at 'immigration control' are the exclusive right of the states via the tenth amendment. Beyond that, the fed has ONE job: to defend the United States (obviously including its borders).

From the pacific coast in southern California to the southern tip of Texas, the US/Mexico border stretches for almost two thousand miles. It is pretty much guaranteed that NOBODY will be willing to pay for building that wall. Definitely not if it is to extend far enough upwards and down into the ground to be any kind of effective at keeping people from crossing.

on "Ali Baba" I found some pricing for prison fences they average around10 to 40 USD pr meter

Please note that this is for the wire netting only. Uprights and Construction costs come on top of that.

Do you have any idea what it would cost JakobA? Of course it would depend entirely on the kind of wall built. A chain link fence probably would be cheapest but Trump says it will be a very good wall.  I'm not sure what that means dollarwise but could it cost billions do you suppose? Thank you for your reply m'dear! :)

This is a very helpful link JakobA. Thanks.  It seems to me Trump is talking about a wall like China has though. Stone or cement or whatever it is made of it is solid not see-through. Some number crunchers will probably come up with figures which might be shocking!  More to come I guess. Since the wall is the centerpiece of the Trump campaign I think we will be hearing a lot more about it. :)
