The disease/condition used to be called "MANIC DEPRESSION". Folks who were flew high as a kite then crashed WAY DOWN. Now?

Well it is called something else today but the disease/condition is the same. Folks who are that can be splendidly coherent and charming one minute and viciously attack you at the next moment! No rhyme nor reason for it. Clearly they are not in control. I guess if they take meds that is helpful. Ever meet one of them? Kinda hard to take when they are in the depressive zone. Delightful when they are manic if somewhat giddy and over the top. No cure. Just mitigation.

Why do names of conditions get makeovers? What was wrong with MANIC DEPRESSIVE? Anyone know?

I do not know why the name change. It is now called Bi-Polar disorder.

Yes I know a few people who suffer from this disease.

It's politically correct to call it bi-polar...and it is real.

So it's PC? I get why we don't use "the N word" E but what is offensive about manic depressive that they needed to find a PC handle? I don't get it.

Ignorant people look at the word 'manic' and see 'maniac'. Same with MRIs.(Magnetic resonance imaging.) It was originally called NMR. (nuclear magnetic resonance) Ignorant folks only see the word 'nuclear' and think they are being bombarded with radiation, as in an x-ray. Thus the name change.

I know it is real. As I said I know people who have suffered with it for years.

Me too m2c. I just wonder why the name was changed. I see nothing offensive in the original name.  I have encountered at least two people with it. One was my boss. At first I didn't have a clue what the heck was going on. One day she came into my office with a jar of special salad dressing she discovered at our local market that she thought I'd like! She was always solicitous and kind and caring on her "good" days. The other times? Out of the blue she'd go bonkers over some tiny little nothing. I started keeping a bottle of  Vitamin B complex in my desk drawer. I talked to a gal at our local health food store and told her my "situation" and she advised just taking one of those pills. They were water-soluble and would take the edge off the stress. They worked! In fact I told our store managers (the couple I worked for owned 7 McDonald's Restaurants) about the pills and told them whenever they were in the office they could just come in and get a pill. They did not need to ask. It's strange how chemical imbalance or whatever causes it can make a perfectly delightful person into a shrew! I wonder if more women suffer from it then men? Thank you for your reply and Happy Thursday! :)

I did not question it's authenticity E. I'm asking what was wrong with manic depressive? Why the change to bi-polar? Thank you for your reply and Happy Thursday. I have encountered more than one sufferer so I know it's real.
