You engage in very pleasant conversation for awhile with someone. Then you find out the person has a DOCTORATE! Does your "LIKE" increase?

Here's why I asked. I find it happened to me.

Jim is going through physical therapy to improve his balance. It was somewhat affected after the stroke he had April 27.

His physical therapist is a lovely young woman named Hillary. She was his physical therapist for another issue when he had plantar fasciitis. She was rather new at that time and didn't have a business card yet. Well yesterday we went in for his appointment and her cards had arrived and were on the desk so I took one.

YIKES! She is a "DOCTOR of Physical Therapy" specializing in Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Sports Medicine and Hand Rehabilitation. WHOA! Now I liked her a lot and respected her a lot before I knew that. But I'm even more impressed now.

Are you like that too? I guess degrees impress me. They shouldn't maybe but they do. To find out that someone you like a lot is so much more than you thought is awesome. Is it being shallow though? I don't know.

    'm not particularly impressed by a degree someone holds.  I come into contact with people who have less formal education, but who are interesting, know a lot about many different things, and who can hold a decent conversation.  I did not go to college, but I can pretty much keep up with a lot of folks who did.  I rarely, if ever, feel inferior to those with college educations.

    I went to Pasadena Junior College L and have an A.A. Degree in Liberal Arts. I went to night school at different times and took Economics and Logic then years later Accounting.  I don't feel inferior to anyone and I'm not sure where you got the idea I was implying that I do. I simply admire educated intelligent people a great deal. My son has a Ph.D and is a tenured professor. I KNOW what that entails and it is very impressive to me that someone achieves such distinction. But inferior? We all have our strengths and weaknesses. No one can do everything better than everyone. I shine in some areas and my light is very dim in others. That is true of everyone no matter how degreed. Thank you for your reply. I'm really puzzled why you thought of "inferior' at all though. Oh well. Maybe you've had some experiences I haven't.

    I'm not at all suggesting that you felt inferior to someone with more of an education.  There are people who DO feel inferior when they meet up with someone highly intelligent or who have a better education.  As you say, we all have something at which we shine and not everything can be taught in school.  If you found my comment offensive, I apologize, it was not meant that way.

    I went to a party with my wife . A lot of her friends were there, mostly factory workers and generally nice guys. Some of use were sitting around and this very large, rotund, long bearded biker looking guy started talking. (He was a biker.) After a few moments of listening to him, I said "You sound like a professor." He said he was. Go figure.

    ((hugs)) You EXACTLY get my point! Thank you for your nifty  first-person reply E . People can be very surprising. Both ways. Surprisingly great and surprisingly disappointing. I bet he had lotsa stories to tell! :)
