Does "balance out" = "cancel out"?
    Not necessarily.

IMO, "cancel out" means you wind up with zero.  While "balance out"means both sides are equal.

Balance out does not equal cancel out.

If one were to put a pound of gold on one side of a scale and a pound of lead on the other, the scales will balance (equal weight on both sides).  If they canceled eachother out, both the gold and the lead would simply cease to exist.

Good and bad can never balance, nor can they ever "cancel" eachother out.  It doesn't work that way.
