There is a STAND BY YOUR MAN song. Is there ever gonna be a STAND BY YOUR WOMAN song or don't they deserve it?

  • A particular song comes to mind somewhat similar in topic.  Billy Joel's 1977 pop hit "She's Always A Woman."  A beautiful tune telling of how a woman is not one dimensional but instead, multifaceted and sometimes difficult for a man to understand.  She has many brightly shining traits but they sometimes share the stage with her darker flaws.  Through all of this He speaks of how, regardless of what anyone might think, she is still beautiful, she is still a woman.  And that to him is a wonderful thing.

    She's Always a Woman

She can kill with a smile, she can wound with her eyes
She can ruin your faith with her casual lies
And she only reveals what she wants you to see
She hides like a child but she's always a woman to me
She can lead you to love, she can take you or leave you
She can ask for the truth but she'll never believe you
And she'll take what you give her as long as it's free

Yeah she steals like a thief but she's always a woman to me
Oh, she takes care of herself, she can wait if she wants
    She's ahead of her time
Oh, she never gives out and she never gives in
    She just changes her mind

And she'll promise you more than the garden of Eden
Then she'll carelessly cut you and laugh while you're bleeding
But she brings out the best and the worst you can be

Blame it all on yourself 'cause she's always a woman to me
Oh, she takes care of herself, she can wait if she wants
    She's ahead of her time
Oh, she never gives out and she never gives in
    She just changes her mind

She is frequently kind and she's suddenly cruel
She can do as she pleases, she's nobody's fool
But she can't be convicted, she's earned her degree
And the most she will do is throw shadows at you
But she's always a woman to me

You LIKE the lyrics WQ? I think it paints a very dark picture of what a woman is. Lies deceits. Different strokes. I think it's very offensive. Happy American Independence Day 4th of July 2019!

I never knew all of the lyrics. i'm glad Twinkle Dink posted them. The lyrics are pretty dark, yeah.

I still see the song as how Twinkle Dink sees it. But, we're both guys, too.

It's all pretty interesting to me now.

I guess I've not really ever listened to all of the lyrics - - I've always focused more on the theme of her (as Twinkle Dink mentions) "multifaceted" characteristics and that " she's always a woman to me". I see where you're coming from, though. The lyrics are darker than I thought.

Yet, somehow, also, especially in the way Joel performs/sings the song itself, I've always taken the song more in the way Twinkle Dink explains in his answer. Joel seems to mean it all as a very strong tribute to the woman.
    :)

    Happy Fourth to you, too!

  • I think I posted this before Welby, but here seems like a great place to do so again.  It's the 2012 Dave Aude remix of the song "Stand By Your Man" by Tammy Wynette.

Yes, I think I remember you posting this - - but I'm enjoying listening again. Funny -- I often don't like remixes that add a heavy beat to 'slower'-type songs - - but I like this. I like Tammy's voice in this song, too.
    :)

There's a remix that radio stations only play now for Hozier's  "Take Me To Church" -- I can't stand it, ha! I adore Hozier's original version, not the remix at all. But radio dj's I listen to seem to think the remix is the one to play, I guess.

Again, I do like this Wynette remix, though.

Thank you for your reply TD. I don't see this song as beautiful at all.  It is very degrading. He lists all her faults and deceptions and explains them away by simply by saying she is always a woman. He paints a very condescending picture of women. That is how I take it. Different strokes for different folks. Read the lyrics again. Please tell me exactly why you think the song is beautiful? Happy American 4th of July Thursday Independence Day 2019! :)

  • Much in the way "Stand By Your Man" speaks disparagingly of men and their negative traits and how we should have pity on them.  As in the lyric..."After all, he's just a man."  Sorry Rosie, I see no difference.  As far as it's beauty, It has a lovely melody, soft and unobtrusive with lyrics backed by piano, that regardless of how we may see them, are written from a place of honesty...his honesty. But hey, music is a form of art, and art is subjective.  As you said different strokes.  Happy 4th to you as well

    Yup.
I don't know if it's maybe because we're men (and, I admit, I never read/listened to all of the lyrics to Joel's song; they are darker than I assumed), but I've always taken the song in the ways you've explained in your answer and comments here. And in the ways I explained a bit more in my comments.
    :)
And, to me, the WAY/manner/style in which Joel performs the song -- it's all meant as a tribute in a good way to my ears.

No worries TD. If that is a love song why doesn't it say I LOVE HER? There are no such words in that entire lengthy song. Did you not notice that? It just disparages and attacks and insults TD. As for Stand by Your man I don't view that as love song either and I never meant to imply I did. I view that as a song a Hillary  Clinton or Melania Trump would sing when justifying her sticking with her cheating man. Stand by Your Man is a plaintiff dirge by a woman who is so lacking in self-esteem she will put up with anything from her man. So we see it differently. Thank you for your clarification. I cannot change how I perceive things nor fake it nor lie about it TD. I calls 'em as I sees 'em. If someone wrote a song like that about me I'd be crushed. I don't know if Billy Joel wrote that about his first wife the gorgeous Christy but if he did no wonder she dumped him. What a crappy smackdown. A pig dressed in velvet is still a pig. That song is a pig to me just as is true about She is Only a Woman to Me. Notice the use of "only". Flattering? I think not.. So I will now stop beating a dead horse and move on! :)

Ronnie Milsap: I'm a Stand By Woman Man

At five o'clock she knows I'll soon be home
And she don't worry 'bout me runnin' round
'Cause all of my good times are waitin' right there for me
And she knows where I'll be when the sun goes down

I'm a stand by my woman man
Our world turns around a little gold band
And love leads us through life, hand in hand

I'm a stand by my woman man
We fall asleep at night thinkin' ain't love grand
That's why I'm a stand by my woman man

When she's down, she knows I'll be beside her

'Cause I'm not just her lover, I'm her friend
Our love keeps gettin' better and I'll gladly spend forever
Standin' by the woman who stands by her man

I'm a stand by my woman man
Our world turns around a little gold band
And love leads us through life, hand in hand

I'm a stand by my woman man
We fall asleep at night thinkin' ain't love grand
That's why I'm a stand by my woman man

I'm a stand by my woman man

    (Stand by your woman man)
We fall asleep at night thinkin' ain't love grand
That's why I'm a stand by my woman man
That's why I'm a stand by my woman man
