The term is a misnomer. There is nothing "progressive" about Liberalism. It does tremendous harm to civil liberties, as well as many other institutions. But that is a different bucket of worms to be examined at another time. The greatest threat to the USA, is in fact, the USA. We are seeing the whole house of cards collapsing in front of us. The American System is unique in so many ways, that the most successful route to undermining it was from within. My dad was one who predicted it more than fifty years ago and he's been proven right. I guess he was some sort of prophet, or maybe he just had a lot of common sense. But then, I think Lincoln addressed the same idea long ago.
Ironic to say Lincoln addressed the idea of harming civil liberties. Unless you are referring to his harm of them. Imprisoning journalists who didn't agree with him, and destroying their businesses/homes. Turning a voluntary association (united STATES) into a required one (UNION).
