Before telephone recording machines you answered every call not knowing who was on the other end. Now?

You preview/audit/ know in advance so you  never ever need to again suffer fools. Same with the TV. Switch channels or turn it off in the olden days. No mute no recording no deleting no PAUSE..

This is progress. Eventually will we progress to the point of NEVER interacting face-to-face or voice-to-voice with another human being? The heaven we all dream of now and then will be our perpetual reality? When you want to "hook up" you make a date. Otherwise solitary isolation hermit-like exultation. Coming soon to a theater near you? That I can tell you. Everyone says so.

    I don't use my caller ID.  When the phone rings, which is not often because everyone who know me knows I hate talking on the phone, I answer it.

    So when you answer  the phone you KNOW it won't be someone who knows you L? We're the exact opposite. If we don't recognize the number we will not answer it.  Why? Because if the call is LEGIT the caller will leave a message. 90% of the calls we get are scams/cons/traps. They NEVER leave a message. Thank you for your reply and Happy Wednesday!  :)

    Not really.  I get very few robocalls.  I've been unlisted since I took my ow apartment, so my number isn't all that available.  Sometimes it's a neighbor who calls, sometimes my friend from Florida.  I'm willing to take the chance.  I like living on the edge. :) :)

     We're unlisted too  L and ALSO on the NO CALL list and we are inundated by and with robocalls! Some days dozens of them! Some days a few. The Answering machine is a sanity saver! You may well be much braver than me sweetie! Thank you for your reply! :)

    In those "olden days" ... the phone had a switch to turn the ringer off.
    At least, ours did. 
    My parents would always turn the ringer off, when they didn't want to answer calls. 
    Mainly during meals or after everyone was in bed.

    Anyway ... your scenario has already appeared in a TV episode.
    Seaquest 2032 ... episode Playtime.
    Mankind basically spent so much time on computers, it died out.

    I know Walt but my folks never would that. Nor would my son allow me to do that. Why? Because they all felt that it could be an emergency and they did not want to cut themselves off from being available. I could not fault the logic. As to that show? I have never heard of it? Is is based in America or some exotic foreign import? What is Seaquest? Thank you for your reply.

    The show was originally Seaquest DSV ... but changed its name after a couple seasons to Seaquest 2032.
    It was an American TV series.  The premise was basically that a United Nations type organization had to patrol ocean colonies and mines.

    "When men have practically exhausted all the Earth's natural resources, colonies have been established at the bottom of the oceans. To avoid conflicts, the SeaQuest, a hyper-sophisticated submarine, is responsible for protecting them."
