I guess our sniffers are not all alike. Can some people actually think skunk stink is pleasurable? There is a plant that is supposed to have a horrible stench that blooms very rarely. People actually stood in lines to experience it.  Would you stand in line for something that stunk? Why?

It's meant to make a horrible stench, Rosie. It's the skunk's protection against would-be attackers. There would be no point in nature endowing the skunk with such a feature if it didn't smell so awful.

So  do all animals' sense of smell find that stench intolerable? We had an awful experience years ago where we used to live NP. It was in an apartment with a screen door to the patio. Sliding glass door on the inside of course. We also had a cat. I guess the skunk got in the patio (we were on the ground floor and the the fence around that patio was not entirely enclosed). When I opened the slider one morning the stench was ...well, you can guess. Our cat was out there too. Poor baby! The spray had gotten him and the screen door. It took days to get rid of it. It is a powerful  weapon . I wonder if troops  took cans of skunk spray into battle how effective would that be in bringing the enemy to its knees? I think I'll ask that question! Thank you for your reply m'dear! :)

A skunk sprayed under my sons bedroom window, which was open at the time. The stench filled the house and it took several days to get rid of.

We kept the fans on and went thru several cans of room spray before we got rid of the smell. It was pretty awful.

I think anyone who has experienced skunk up close and personal finds it unforgettable . I   don't know of anyone who likes the experience! I just wish skunks could eat something to sweeten the smell but then I  guess it wouldn't be such a potent defense against other critters. Thank you for your reply Lulu'sMom and Happy Sunday!   :)

Probably not. Flies eat escrement and fly towards the smell of it, not away from it. But most animals recoil from skunk stink.

  • Even skunks dislike the smell of their spray.  Juvenile skunks have been observed spraying each other and running away as sort a 'pratical joke' amongst the litter.

Rosie - I think the plant you mean, or one like it, is a Brommeliad (species?), a tropical rain-forest dweller whose bloom smells of decomposing animal tissue to attract flies.

"What makes a skunk's spray so noxious is the complex combination of sulfuric chemicals called thiols. The human nose is extremely sensitive to thiols, and can detect these chemicals in minute quantities of just a few parts per billion. In fact, our nose is so sensitive to thiols that they are added to natural gas so we can detect when it leaks."
