Animals are BORN and so are flowers according to poet Thomas Gray. Do you think of flowers that way?

"Full many a flower is BORN to blush unseen
And waste its fragrance on the desert air"

From Thomas Gray's "Elegy in a Country Churchyard"

So everything alive was BORN then including vegetables? Minerals are formed so is that when they're "born"?

No.   I see "born" as meaning coming from a mother and father.  A flower comes from a plant; and while there are male and female plants, I don't consider flowers as their "offspring".

Do you like the poem and the meaning behind it? Poets do take license when they express themselves.  Ever read any poems by e. e. cummings? In this case I think it is an absolutely excellent and elegant poem the meaning of which is haunting to me. How many tremendously gifted people have come and gone about whom we know nothing? It should give one pause methinks. At least it does me! Different strokes. Thank you for your reply Shuhak and Happy Saturday! :) This post was edited by RosieG at August 3, 2019 1:10 PM MDT

To be honest, I found the poem to be very depressing.   But that's just me.
