Well, we don't know if he was joking or there was a serious intent in his throw-away statement, but Russia and China are also sniffing around the Arctic and the last people those or the US Government would care about are the residents.
There are two strategic rewards if the ice retreats as predicted: potentially, minerals on Greenland and in the surrounding sea-bed, and navigable Polar routes for shipping. These even before establishing military bases or anything in the area.
(The Siberian coast and Novaya Zemlya are already dotted with the ugly ruins of Cold War military installations and their detritus, all now derelict.)
Subsequently I have heard others had thought about buying the country too. Greenland says it is open for business but not for sale. They got a lot of free publicity thanks to dumbunny chump who is still pursuing purchase apparently allegedly! I dunno how things like that enter the mind of a homo sap. Why not buy Iceland?
