I think I know why. Because Trump does not think and Trump was likely using this "action" as a way to deflect the horrible coverage of his activities during this period. Like maybe he heard he was being SUIED again? Or his income taxes and the demand by Congress that he hand them over? Or accusals of RAPE by E Jean what-s her name? Or his miserable poll numbers? Who knows? But what I do know? It was NOT something he thought about. I know this because he cannot THINK.

It makes sense to pull out of the "short-range" treaty ... since China was never a party to it, refuses to be a party to it, and is developing weapons covered by the treaty. I don't doubt Russia was ignoring the treaty (as accused), since they share a border with China and the two are historic rivals. I would even be willing to bet that the "experimental rocket" that exploded was such a weapon, which is why the Russians are all "ignore the explosion, nothing to see here" about it.
I also get the feeling that Trump likes explosions, and would enjoy seeing a demonstration of a new missile. Though I wouldn't put it past him to invite Putin, Kim, or Xi to also watch it.
