Book knowledge versus on-the-job experience. Reading about how to versus actually doing. Can the reader of books ever be as knowledgeable as the actual doer/experiencer? How?

Some seem to think experience isn't the best teacher. Than one can do a serviceable job without ever experiencing the reality of it. Do you agree? Why?

    Books are needed to learn the basics but experience is absolutely needed to learn the profession, if I had to choose one it would be experience no question.
