What constitutes an "ale" what makes a beer an ale or ginger an ale?

    Depends on what country you are in, I guess.

    In the USA ... "ale" is generally a type of beer with a bitter flavor and higher alcoholic content.

    Except "ginger ale" isn't a beer.  But there is a "ginger beer".

    Ginger beer is actually brewed and fermented while ginger ale is essentially a carbonated beverage made from water and gingerGinger beer often has much more of a “gingery” flavor and because it's fermented, is less carbonated.
