It was rotting away because it was made with SHODDY material with tiny tiny tiny tiny holes making it unseaworthy. As they go lower and lower in the water they refuse to let go of the rotted thing to which they cling. They think it has magical powers and will save them.
Is it faith or stupidity at work here?
