Do animals recognize themselves when they are front of a mirror or do they think that is another other whatever?

  • I've seen cats attack their reflection in the mirror.  So either they are not recognizing themselves or they are self loathing.

Our beloved cat TIGGER who passed away two years ago used to stroll in front of a full-length mirror and stare. I do not know what he saw there. He did not attack or pose or prance or make funny faces. He did not touch the mirror. He just looked for awhile and then very nonchalantly moved on. What was going on in his mind I do not know. He did not share that with me. Thank you for your reply PS and the graphic and Happy Friday. As an aside that cat appears to be WAY too fat. Not good for its heart or longevity. • It does look a little plump but you never know. Could just be a bad angle. It has always been said that the camera adds 10 lbs and on a cat that can appear to be catastrophic.

Or deadly. I read once upon a time awhile ago that the largest cat ever weighed 44 lbs and he was taken away from the owners to save his life by the Humane Society I think. Thank you for your additional PS! :)

I read that elephants are one of the few animals that recognize themselves in a mirror.
