After what or whom were you named? A person a place?

My mom was pregnant with me when she saw the movie ROSEMARIE with Jeanette McDonald and Nelson Eddy.

I have a grandmother named Rose and a grandmother named Mary so she let them think I was named after them (with a slight adjustment from Mary to Marie). They bought it and were happy. That's my story. What's yours?

As far as I know I was not named after anyone, not even grand-parents, or anything - my parents simply chose my name. Same for my brother and two sisters.

For some reason though they gave my brother and I just one Christian-name each, but our sisters, two. I have no idea why, and neither uses her middle name.

Incidentally, some Britons with a middle name prefer that to be the one used, but otherwise ignore it. Habitually using the name-initial-name construction, American style, is very unusual here, and largely confined to a few show-business types.

My sister was born on December 15...rather near Christmas. So my mom named her CAROL Ann...Carol for Christmas Carol. I asked her why I didn't have a middle name and she said she thought Rosemarie was long enough and she didn't want to saddle me with another name. I guess my name IS two names...Rose and Marie...just smushed together. I didn't like it much as a kid but I grew to like it. I never had a nickname until I moved to Massachusetts and met a gal whose name was Nancy. She started calling me ROSIE and I've been Rosie ever since. She is also the one who started calling my son Rich.  He is a Richard. He will be 54 on his next birthday and he goes by Rich! If Nancy hadn't come into our lives who knows what he would have called himself? We called him Richard. Rich suits him perfectly. I might have lived my entire life without a nickname! Do you like your name? Thank you for your reply Durdle and Happy Monday! :)

I'm used to my name now but originally hated it, coming to accept it only when learning of sharing it with various famous people - so it can't have done them much harm.

Is there a name you admire that you'd prefer to have been yours? Thank you for your reply Durdle! :)

I don't know, really. I must admit I have never really thought about it.
