Ever hear of "OTZI the iceman"? His mummified body was tattooed. Dates back to between 3370 and 3100 B.C. Artwork on skin?

Because they had no cave walls or canvas? Necessity is the mother of invention? Skin was always available?

    Well, we have canvas and paper now, but it still doesn't stop people having tattoos!

    Here's what puzzles me though Durdle. Who was the FIRST person who was BRAVE enough to either puncture or have someone else puncture the skin and inject dyes into it? I've never had a tat but I expect getting one isn't pain-free. How did they know it wouldn't poison them/kill them? They were VERY BRAVE don't you think? Thank you for your reply! :)

    We can never know who invented tattooing, and yes, it was a hell of a risk to take! I expect it often went wrong, by poisoning or by sepsis, in the early stages.

    I've never had the urge to have a tattoo, partly because I don't like them much anyway, partly because it does hurt, though I've heard it's not too bad.
