Read the words or not as you wish. I shared this with Answerbag members long ago.Words written to me specifically. Wanna know who?

I am a huge JOHN STEINBECK fan. Decades ago when I was in my 20's I wrote him a very long letter(8 pages both sides on 8-1/2x 11 lined notepaper) to John Steinbeck c/of his publisher. Never once did I think he would reply. But he did. On a postcard in his own handwriting both sides. Now is when you should move on if you don't care.  I don't want his words wasted on those who won't appreciate them. You know who(m) you are. Those who stay and read it I think will find it worthwhile.

Dear Rosemarie
I know only three sure paths to contentment. 1. Lobotomy. 2. Senility 3. In curious and uncritical self satisfaction. Happyness (sic) comes only in bursts and sexual love the same. As for accomplishment...it keeps ahead of you and the more you accomplish the less it is enough. The only fulfilled people I know are those whose curiosity keeps them too busy to wonder whether they happy, fulfilled, contented or not. Be sure that no matter what you do it will not be enough. As for direction there are millions of them and they are all the same one. And in human endeavor the range between great and small is very short.  Yours, John Steinbeck"

You're welcome.
