A Florida judge sentenced a man who missed jury duty to jail. Know what the punishment was?

Ten days in jail
1 year or probation
150 hours of community service
A fine of $223

The young man was black. Did that have anything whatsoever to do with it? I dunno. I'm just askin'.

You know what I wanna know?  This is all over the news still. I saw it at least a day or two ago.  So WHY IS THIS SENTENCE BEING UPHELD?

This is cruel and unusual punishment.  There is no reason for it.  The judge should be suspended and fined himself or herself.    AND OF COURSE THIS WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED TO ANY WHITE KID.

I read that some of it will be mitigated Sharon. The 150 hours will be knocked down to 30. But of course we all know if he were a white boy it never would have happened. If you're aware of this then you know what kind of fine young man he is. That apparently does not matter. I have NEVER heard of it happening before. Have you? The racists are loving it and I'm sure chump is all on board with it. I wonder if he ever voted?  Thank you for your reply and Happy Tuesday! :) This post was edited by RosieG at October 8, 2019 2:45 AM MDT

In FLORIDA?  I was put in jail.  Do you know what I was doing?  NOTHING.  I was (I WOULD NOT LIE TO YOU) walking down the street going home to my house from the grocery store a block away.  They CARDED me. The police stopped me and CARDED me.  Meaning I had no ID on me, they said I was wanted on some charge that was non-existant and they put me IN JAIL.  I could do nothing either. I had little money.  I was in Florida with my boyfriend and we were living hand-to-mouth just to have an adventure. But we both worked and had zero police record so there was NO warrant out for me.

And I could do nothing about it.  I was in jail for TWO DAYS.  I am not kidding. And I  was totally innocent.

They felt like arresting me, so they did.

From what I've heard about Florida from people that lived there and left is that if you don't have a whole lot of money or you're not a retiree then Florida just isn't for you.  If you're poor then Florida's a police state for you.  That's what I've been told anyway from some people who used to live there.

Chapter 40 of the Florida Statutes. If a person does not report for jury duty without a proper excuse, they could be required to pay a fine of up to $500 by the court where they were to serve. More importantly, a person who does not appear could also be found in contempt of court and given a six-month jail sentence.

The man overslept and did not ever bother to call the court to explain.  Just no call/no show. Do that with most jobs and they will fire you.
The judge could have put him in jail for much longer with a much larger fine.   He wanted the young man to see that it was a serious crime to skip jury duty.

Judge John Kastrenakes, the same judge who ordered the initial sentence Friday, rescinded the ruling and vacated the probation sentence with 30 community service hours Monday. “The apology letter read by Mr. Somerville was moving, sincere and heartfelt,” Kastrenakes said in the order. “I know he has been totally rehabilitated.” NBC reports that Somerville was chosen as a juror Aug. 20 for a civil trial in Florida’s 15th judicial circuit. He was ordered to return the following day at 9:30 a.m. but did not show up, leading him to be found in contempt of court on Sept. 23.
