What is an UNCLE TOM precisely? A black man who denigrates blacks and kisses up to whites? Is there a female counterpart?

Aunt Jemima comes to mind but I have no idea why. Anyway being called an UNCLE TOM is no compliment. It speaks of betrayal of ones own people to me but I don't really know if that is what it means. So. What does it mean to you and why?

Are token blacks Uncle Tom's? Do you have to be one(Ben Carson comes to mind) knowingly or can you trick yourself into believing you are there because you are really valued? I dunno. Just wondering.
