Do churches make POLITICAL contributions? I know they promulgate partisan political views. WHY SHOULD THEY BE TAX-EXEMPT?

If you take the churches tax exempt status then you also take the Planned Parenthood exempt status (PP does make political donations), and Media Matters etc. Political action committees as well.

    This why SCOTUS matters.

The Johnson rule should be removed.

I know I can GOOGLE "The Johnson rule" but how's about you telling me what it is m2c? I've never heard of it. You make an excellent point. Thank you for your reply and Happy Wednesday to thee! :) One caveat. SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE. Remember that?

The amendment to the tax code, which was signed in 1954 and is named for its primary sponsor, then-Senator Lyndon Johnson, has had limited impact. It does not prevent churches from engaging in all political activity, with nonpartisan voter education fully allowed.

Separation of church and state means we do not want the state interfering with church. The state should not tell the church what they can or cannot say. Or telling people which church they must support. Or a church being in control of the gov.

We should not have special rules for churches that do not apply to other non profits.

According to the law they're not supposed to.  Of course when has law meant anything to anyone?  Laws are meant to be bypassed or broken.

There are some churches who don't support political candidates or express political views.  They simply tell the Good News of Jesus.  However, they get lumped in with all the other so-called "churches".
