I remember women being called broads as recently as the 1970s. When my mom was in college in the 1950s (class of '53, sorority sister of Ruth Bader and classmate of Marty Ginsburg), they were called coeds.

Yes, we have had coeds for many a moon, I forgot that it was an antique word till you mentioned it, and I realized I have not heard that term in a long time.

WOW about Ruth Bader.  You are interesting after all.  LOL

Well if I was lady back in those days and somebody called me a broad I'd smack them and say - I ain't  no broad see. Or if  they called me a moll I'd smack them and say - I don't belong to anybody see. Or if they called me a gun moll I'd smack and say - I don't need no shooter see. And I'd do it all because I was a proud dame. Cheers!

If they called me that in a very very quiet voice I'd say - hoochie mammas say what? Then when they say - what I'd smack them and say - I'm not a what I'm a dame see. Cheers!

Well after all the smacking I would probably have a sore hand so if somebody said - what's up toots I'd say - my foot then I would step on their toes and say - nobody calls this dame toots see. Cheers!

    How about “dolls”?

Let’s compare how weird that era seemed next to terms like “bitches” and ”ho’s“ so common in the current vernacular.
Don’t think I have as much of a problem with the older ones.

Back then guys were ”fellas” and “Joes”, or “mugs”. Nowadays, they‘re ”fools“, “swingin’ di-ks” or
    “muthaf—kas”.

    Ah, progress.

It is just another way to say I have no respect for myself or anyone else.

Those other words sound just as nasty way back when.  Very derogatory.

I think it’s a difference between making light of others as opposed to outright denigrating them.

Respect, dignity and courtesy are fading traditions, I suspect.

Just look at who’s running the country, and how they got there. Not much to work with in that example.

Well, I am NOT arguing this point, for sure.  Calling women bitches and ho's is worthy of a slap up the side of the head at the very least.
How do you think you are a worthwhile anything when the person you are attached to is a bitch and a ho to you.  How classy and what style.

But to call someone a broad to me is revolting.  Sorry.   I think some mob jerk wants to push his girlfriend around.  It's nauseating to me.

Only among certain groups.  In certain company. Just like some people refer to us as "hoes" and "sluts" now.  Really no difference.  I've never carried a gun nor have I ever been referred to as a "dame" and, well, I am just not very "broad" anyway so I don't fit any of those.  God knows what people have called me behind my back.
