An Answermug friend tells me that in Oregon and Washington Independent need the PERMISSION of the GOP/DEMS to vote in their primaries! WHY?

Do you live in a state that does that to Independents? You know what. I don't even know if California does that. I'm gonna check but I think that is very UNAMERICAN. To put strictures on primaries to prevent anyone who is a registered voter from registering. What think you and why?

Officially, the reason is that political parties are private organizations.
And private organizations are allowed to limit who can vote for official positions.

Unofficially - I believe it may be because the political parties are afraid of the electorate.
Remember what happened with the "Tea Party", taking over Republican elections?
Or the scandal in the Democratic Party, when they robbed Bernie Sanders of the nomination?

If you open the decision of who a party officially backs to non-members ... you get instances where the public decides to back somebody who doesn't agree with all the party platform.  You take power away from the party elite, who generally tell the members who to back.

And what would be the point of a primary run like a general election, other than to waste money?

I live in an open primary state. We do not even register with a party at all.

Most states you do and that is the only primary you are allowed to vote.   This is supposedly done to make sure GOP voters are picking their candidates and Dems are picking their candidates etc.

There are some people who will vote in the opposite parties primary to either pick the worst candidate or help prevent the strongest candidate from getting the nomination. I believe the term is called "strategic registration".

I have thought about voting in the Dem primary to nominate the easiest Dem to beat.  But as of yet have never done that.

If I lived in a state like CA or NY, I would be registered as a Dem to vote in the primary.  And would vote for the most moderate Dem running.  Because I would know that any Rep has no chance. So the Dem primary is basically the general election. This post was edited by my2cents at November 8, 2019 11:13 AM MST

I'm shocked that you would contemplate that m2c. It is devious deceitful and makes you a LIAR to boot. Why would you even ever almost consider demeaning yourself like that? Sorry but I don't believe you. A FIRST. I think you just said it to show how pro anything-but-Dem you are. To disrespect yourself that much? To go so low that you would do that? You just shocked the he** outta me. I hope you take it back. NOW. Thank you for your reply. I expect more than that from you. Don't dangle crap like that in front of me. YOU KNOW BETTER. You can believe or not. Does not matter to me.

In the General my vote will go with the Rep in 99.9% of the time. The .1% would be either a non vote or a 3rd party vote if I did not like the GOP candidate. As I did when Akin was running (the legitimate rape will not result in pregnancy guy....I voted for the Libertarian)

In fact, I may go in this March with my MAGA hat and ask for the Dem primary ballot and vote for Biden.

I apprecaite your honesty m2c. I see that the most important thing to you is for Republicans to prevail no matter what. And to that end you are not above doing anything you can to help. Even vote for the opposition. I would not have guessed that. Sometimes ignorance is bliss. I would have preferred that you never tell me that because now I am forced to see you differently. Thank you for your reply.
