Anyone out there old enough to remember the Norman Rockwell covers on magazines depicting a holiday?

The entire family was seated around the table on which was laden a great deal of food. You knew they were about to say GRACE and give their thanks and then the turkey would be carved and the dishes passed around. We'd eat too much. The women went into the kitchen to do the cleanup. The men retired to the living room to watch some sport and adjust their belts which were too tight. Those were the days. Anyone still enjoy them in the Normal Rockwell way? Do you even know what I am talking about?

Today is Thanks giving. The PORTAL to wondrous things. Bargains. Deals. Great buys. Folks gather together to plot their plan of attack at various stores. Do they gather at the table and have a lazy thereafter? They do not.

They buy Christmas gifts at great discounts thus transforming Christmas into expectations of hauling in a boatload of stuff loot. Not just the kids but the adults too. Christmas is not at all about anything with religious connotations. It isn't even about the little kids and Santa Claus and time with family and giving pause to appreciate one another. What does the day represent? Opening presents, eating a lot of food and holiday parties where you can get all juiced up tanked up dolled up. Top it off with New Year's Eve and well ya gotchure hat trick. Your win place show. Then you go into a funk at the beginning of the new year and wait for next year when you can do the same thing all over again.

What happened to Thanksgiving? Where did Christmas go? Anyone know?

Of COURSE I cannot get one of them to post now.  Sigh.

A large family gathered at a table for a holiday meal as the Turkey arrives at the table.

"Freedom From Want" is the name of the painting. It hangs in the Norman Rockwell Museum in Housatonic, MA, about 8 miles up the road from Theory Wellness in Great Barrington.

    I remember them.

These days we worship the almighty dollar and are thankful for the bounties it buys.  We pray to the dollar's offspring - the credit and debit card (please don't be declined... please don't be declined).  The most holy and sacred day of year is  the last friday in November.  That's the day we have set aside to truly glorify our divine green lord.  Remember the blessed word -  Thou shalt punch and gouge thy neighbor lest they make it to the checkout first!

And why the need for this great ceremony?  Christmas is coming!  A time of peace and goodwill towards our fellow man... you know, the one you punched into a coma just so you could get that 100" TV for $78 on "holy friday".
Oh, but one day wasn't enough to for consumers to glorify their green god.  No, first companies started the day Thursday (screw their minimum wage workers who are forced away from their families).  Each year they move it further and further back until now it starts in july! But wait! If they extend the ceremony into December, companies can rake in even more money (praise the great green god).  No time for being thankful, gotta spend, spend, spend!!!  Sales!  Prices slashed!  Who cares if they go into debt, so long as they buy, buy, buy!

As for those paintings, they depict a time gone forever.  A time when people cared about each other.  Nowadays it's me first, screw everyone else!  And the very idea of women cleaning up while men recline?  How demeaning!  Why, to even think of such heresies (let alone to have vile paintings of it) is blasphemous, and is punishable by by slander or ostracism (much like when you try to discipline your child).

As usual what you wrote could have been written by me Shuhak. Verbatim. Did you look at the beautiful covers Sharon was kind enough to dig up and post on this thread? SIGH. Today truly is BLACK FRIDAY. A BLACK MARK A BLACK DEED A BLACK HEART. What is blacker than greed? Thank you for your thoughtful reply and Happy Friday! :) This post was edited by RosieG at November 29, 2019 10:06 AM MST
