Discussion»Statements»Rosie's Corner» Hypnosis works for some and doesn't work for others. I am one of them. Have you ever been hypnotized? HOw'd it go?
Yes. I have. It worked part of the time, but if I was drinking a lot of caffeine (back then I WAS drinking a LOT of coffee) I could not be hypnotized for long periods. But I went down amazingly fast by a magician of all things, that I was playing a game of chess with. HE CREAMED ME BY THE WAY IN CHESS. But he put me under in less than five minutes. I was in a restaurant/bar. not even a couch. BUT I WAS VERY TIRED and that helped. I gave into it.
I was hypnotized by a past-life regression therapist in the 70's. I went on and off for a year or two. Some times I would experience amazing revelations and sometimes I would fidgit and just wait for the session to end.
There are other methods to hypnotize someone besides the old tried and true methods. Psychoanalysis is asking a lot of questions and having the person answer them. With a guide. That is very hypnotic in itself.

Thank you for your thoughtful and informative first-person reply Sharon. Experiencing something always lends credence to it. Did what you find out ever upset you or was it all helpful?
That is awesome my friend. I'm so happy it worked for you. I might have told you I tried it many decades ago. I used to have a weight problem and tried every diet ever invented and I was sick and tired of failing. My dentist was a family friend and he was also a hypnotist. He developed the skill because some people are terrified of going to the dentist so he wanted to allay their fears. I asked if it could work for me. I thought maybe a suggestion implanted in my mind could be a warning sign that would flash when I was going to pig out on the something. We tried a few times and nothing happened. He told me some people are resistant because they will not and cannot let someone else control them. Consciously I wanted the help but I guess my subconscious wouldn't allow it. Oh well. Thank you for your reply L! :)
I think part of the problem with hypnosis for weight loss is that while you can live without ever smoking another cigarette, you can't stop eating. It's more of a learning to curtail what you eat and how often and why (other than actual hunger) so you have to be happy with eating less. Yes, there are people who can't be hypnotized, but I'm glad it worked for me.
It went well. My psychotherapist had training in Erickson's style of hypnosis. She used it to help me improve my boundaries. It worked very well in a surprising way. I was expecting that it would enable me to find it easier to say no when people made unwelcome requests, and easier to assert the no when others tried to push the boundaries. It did work in exactly this way. But I also discovered that I barely ever had to assert myself. It became very rare for anyone to try it on with me. I think it must have changed something very subtle in my demeanour so that I no longer looked like a soft touch or an easy mark.
My therapist explained to me that it's a common misconception that it is only gullible people who are easily hypnotised. Experiments have found that a good imagination is the best predictor for successful hypnosis.
There are exceptions bw. I have a very good imagination but I am one of those who is unable to be hypnotized. I was told there are some people who cannot cede control over them to anyone and so they will resist being "put under". My conscious mind wanted the help but my subconscious was in charge apparently. SIGH. Since my mid-30's I've been slender without dieting so I didn't need it as it turns out. Thank you for your thoughtful and informative reply! I remain gullible. I am open to people and trust that they will be honest. I am constantly wrong but it doesn't matter. I can't change who I am. I don't lie so I figger why would anyone ese lie? And because of the undependability of memory maybe all liars aren't liars. Maybe some rely on very skizzy memories. And so it goes.
