    I think you are making much more of this tenuous connection than is really there.

    When Sarah Palin cited Alaska's proximity to Russia, she was trying to bolster her (nearly non-existent) foreign policy credentials. There is little to no evidence she had special knowledge of the future of US-Russia relations.

    Moreover, during the time leading up to the 2008 presidential election, US-Russia relations were strained by Russia's military conflict with the Republic of Georgia.

    What has changed since then is our current President having apparent private economic ties with people of power and privilege in Russia. The conflict between Donald Trump's private interests with Russia and the United States national interests with respect to Russia is what has led to the contemporary strangeness.

    I don't believe Palin could have predicted that turn of events, even by accident.
