Given the general principles of current Republicans and their followers, those Democrats would still have the moral high ground---by default at a minimum, and by philosophical superiority which is easily understood by anyone sufficiently educated to understand the overarching importance of a person's principles to what he actually thinks is proper conduct in an elected official.
I think the donaldjohntrump supporters were waiting for someone exactly like him to support. I don't think he "turned" them at all. He just revealed how many people have no moral principles no integrity no honor and no appreciation for truth. The don sanctified elevated legitimatized corruption on all levels.
