This question was inspired by an Answermug friend. Not directly but peripherally. Ever meet someone who entranced you whom you liked?

Then reality set in and you discovered the clay feet of the  golden"idol". Turned out to be a real disappointment?

Does it take gullibility not to see what's really there or is it rather that some folks are so good at faking things anyone would be scammed conned duped tricked humiated ashamed for believing him/her?

Yes, I call this phenomenon "days that end in a 'y'"...

On a (slightly) more serious note, I have a couple of comments:

    1) We are social creatures who generally find that social interactions improve our lives. Hence, we want to believe that people are good and kind and prosocial. In pursuit of that belief, we will tend to self-delude and idealize others (especially when dating/relationships are involved...)

    2) While it is true that some people are deliberately deceptive about their character and intentions, and it is very true that most people try to "put their best face forward" when dealing with other people, I think most people  (mostly unintentionally) do reveal their ceramic lower appendages, IF we pay close enough attention. But, of course, because of 1) above, we don't pay close enough attention and are later shocked to discover porcelain podiatry.

Even us loners are social creatures. Even we who started out to be painfully shy finally do get the courage to reach out and make contact. But it's really tricky. Some folks bounce back quite regularly from disappointment while don't don't. What causes degree of bounceability in some that others lack? I'm gonna ask. Thank you for your thoughtful and informative reply SP. Sometimes "knowing" helps and sometimes it doesn't. Why is that? I'm gonna ask that too! :) This post was edited by RosieG at December 14, 2019 7:54 AM MST

Remember Grumpy Cat? I think I read that he died awhile ago. Sad that. But he probably lived a very rich good life while he was here. Thank you for your reply and the photo SP! :)
