Allegedly NATO has a plan for WW 3. So does that mean it is a potential or a given? Where will it begin and how will it end?

It is likely NATO has several "plans" for World War III.

That's what high-ranking military officials do when they are not actually in a shooting war. They develop plans for what they would do when the next war starts. They imagine and simulate (via various forms of war-gaming) what such wars might look like, what kinds of military forces will be involved, and what the likely outcomes might be.

None of these plans are givens. For decades, NATO planned what it would do if the Soviet Union decided to send a large conventional army through an area of Germany called the Fulda Gap in an attempt to take over Western Europe.  As history reveals, that never happened.

My prediction for when the next major global conflict will start is when sea level rise and other environmental consequences (e.g. drought/massive crop failure) produces mass refugee migrations. Some countries will not want to accept the refugees, and will line their border with troops to stop them (sound familiar?). The exodus countries will insist, for "humanitarian reasons" that the less-stricken countries accept refugees, and will send troops to "assure their safety" as they cross into the reluctant countries.

Then the shooting will start, and I believe either India or Pakistan will be the first country to drop a nuke. What happens after that is difficult to predict.

You're welcome, and thanks for the kind wishes.

In rereading my answer, I note I didn't include two points I meant to discuss.

    1) Even the best military planning usually "fails" when the actual shooting starts. War is inherently an unpredictable entity.

    2) I think the WW3-inducing refugee crises will be due to global climate change. Nor do I think we can stop it from happening. We have spent too many years ignoring the problem and effective preventive solutions at this point will cause comparable economic/social disruption as climate change itself.

Already we have seen many countries overrun with refugees from wars going on so it will certainky be worse when the numbers increase. Thank you for your reply SP! :) This post was edited by RosieG at January 1, 2020 9:01 AM MST
