I don't think the issue with President Trump is so much the automaticity of his actions. Modern research on human cognition indicates far more of how we function is based on automatic subconscious processes than most people recognize.
I think the more pertinent issues are his narcissism (hence, everything is about how it will affect him personally), his lack of empathy (hence, his inability to understand the motivations of other people), and his dementia (which impairs his judgement about the rationality of his decisions and lessens his impulse control).
Early in Trump's administration, there was a segment of our political class and political press class who assumed "the adults in the room" would steer Trump towards relatively rational decisions. Unfortunately, those who believed in the "adults in the room" theory badly misunderstood just how differently demented narcissists think than "adults" do.
Thank you for another fine thoughtful useful and informative analysis SP. I give up trying to figger him out. He is a crackpot wackdoodle in my opinion but always was. The rest of what he is has been displayed for all to see and the gullibles adoring worship him I believe SPECIFICALLY for his defects flaws imperfections. GO FIGGER! What comes next who knows? He learned a thing. ONE thing. If you are backed by rich crooks, you can get away with anything. His talent HIS ONE TALENT is being able to smell the crook and shyster in people. He can sniff out chaos and disorder and he feeds off this energy.

He was a KNOWN crackpot wacka doodle Sharon for decades. The gullibles bonded with him and now will never abandon him.
