Some folks are very polite to strangers but not so much to those they know. Shouldn't it be the reverse?

We should be polite to everyone.
But since we don't know how a stranger will react to non-politeness ... we're more careful to be polite with them.

I mean, we generally know how much "stuff" people we know will put up.
But a stranger may just knock your teeth out, for the same "stuff".  Who knows?

Excellent point. So fear of the unknown forces us to be on our best behavior. You never know when an irate driver will pick up the gun he has on the seat beside him and shoot you dead if you cut him off. I'm serious. There have been such beserk crackpot wackadoodle murderers behind the wheel. There was a time when driving on a California freeway was like playing Russian Roulette. We live in gunlovers culture so it's best to be afraid of anyone you don't know. SIGH. Whatta life! Thank you for your reply Walt and Happy Friday to ya! :)

    As said by Robert Heinlein:
“An armed society is a polite society. Manners are good when one may have to back up his acts with his life.”

The benefits of "the way of the gun" seem to be universally believed in and depended upon. Youse have a cherse. Be a gun or a nongun. The guns have the power and the nonguns have to cower. I will always be a nongun and perhaps I will die at the hands of a gun. Different strokes.SIGH. Thank you for your reply Walt. Here comes another question.
