Homo sapiens developed language, both written and spoken, as an Answermug friend has stated. What about other animals?

They must have developed language in a way to communicate...certain sounds mean certain things. Perhaps even certain scratch marks mean something to them. How would we ever know and what if it were happening at a microscopic level? I know. SCI FI stuff but then again who knows?
