Nick Gilder - Hot Child In The City (1978)

This one-hit wonder in the USA somehow failed to catch on in the UK despite Kenny Everett's attempts to promote it by having Hot Gossip dance to it on his TV show. In a year when the charts were beset by an unusually large number of disco hits and cheesy Grease songs, it would have been a breath of fresh air to see this fine song duplicate its US success on this side of the pond, but sadly it wasn't to be. Still, the song was not forgotten after it completed its US chart run. There was a movie in 1987 (albeit a direct-to-video job, not a cinema release) named after it, and the song may also have been the inspiration for Billy Idol's similarly-titled "Hot In The City".

  • I'm not sure what it was, but this never caught on with me. It just seemed derivative for some reason.

Some of my friends liked the song, but they didn't like Nick Gilder's voice, they though it was too high-pitched. I can't say that was the reason why it flopped in the UK though, because the Bee Gees and Earth, Wind and Fire had major hits around that time singing in high voices. The real reason why Nick Gilder was not successful in the UK has never been discovered.

  • I'm sure that the greatest minds in Britain still wrack their brains over this very issue to this day. ;=)

I know one or two people who like Nick Gilder and were surprised that he never had a hit in the UK, not even with "Hot Child In The City". Lol:)
