On the new tax plan, does anyone know it you can still deduct you children?

  • Apparently the new tax plan would increase tax credit from $1,000 per child to $1,600?

  • Yes, I seen that. But I am talking about deducting your dependents.  I think it was $4000 per child last year.
I know Trump's first tax plan eliminated that.

  • Oh, sorry. My wife takes care of all of that. Our kids are all grown. My elderly mom lives with us, are you able to take a tax write off for that? I tried to get her on my insurance some years ago but found out I couldn't do that. I think they should allow your elderly dependent parents to be on your insurance but then again, most people don't seem to feel an obligation to take care of their parents so might not affect many.

  • Yes, currently you can claim an elderly parent as a dependent on your 1040, worth $4050 last year. May even qualify for the $1000 credit (not sure). I agree about the insurance.

It is that dependent deduction I am looking to see if is gonna be eliminated.
