You better do all this warm fuzzy stuff at the beginning, because it's not going to help once a marriage gets to the point of affairs, lawyers, or despair. A relationship is like an organism. It can die. And most marriages do. That's just a statistical fact. Almost half end in divorce, and many who don't divorce but are unhappy stay. So that's half plus many more...a majority. Most marriages end up unhappy. If you're having marriage problems you are a frog in a kettle. And if your spouse is unable or unwilling to work with you to correct the problems, all the communication exercises, choreplay, retreats, counseling, and workbooks in the world are not going to fix it.
