    The question of whether to use spanking or some other punishment is individual to each family.  I think it is also individual whether or not to use any punishment; I know of, but do not employ, child discipline methods which reject punishment entirely.
    Respect and fear are not synonymous.  Respect is earned.  Fear is imposed.  A child may fear a consequence for misbehavior but accepts the consequence out of respect for the parent.
    I have written elsewhere in the context of my own childhood memories about knowing that I could have resisted punishment but never did.  I have certainly given the topic much thought and finally concluded that the reason were trust, respect and love.  less

    I love my step-daughter.  It is my duty and honor to raise her well.  less
