Because then the political right's propaganda about how Dabgum Gubmint Kant Do Nuttin Right Nohow would be disproved, and people would stop voting for right-wing politicians, and that is not OK with The Powers That Be.

Because the sick and needy can’t contribute as much to political campaigns as defense contractors.

One simple sentence that sums up the entire situation with enormous weight and conviction.  Thank you, Don

What you say ,Jon, makes total sense. However, the American military power has done well to keep our homeland relatively safe.  O.K., they sneak-attacked us at Pearl Harbor and the Twin Towers, but history shows we more than evened the score.

Yes, we've evened the score. I appreciate your comment. The American military has also been used for offensive purposes and to achieve political means. Iraq 1&2, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Grenada, covert actions in Nicaragua and El Salvador...Let's not forget those we do not know of and the egregious wasteful spending by the pentagon that has been well-documented through the years.
I'm for a strong defense, but I think it's prudent that we pullback on it's imperialistic, interventional policies which not only make us unpopular throughout the world but cost the US trillions. This post was edited by Jon at February 27, 2020 9:36 AM MST

Well, after spending 14 trillion on defense, there is no money left.

Looks like a "Budget re-write" and rescinding tax cuts are in order...

Defense is the government's job.  You having health insurance is not...that's your own job if you want it.

    That's old and tired.

    You are responsible for yourself.

Did you test every bit of food you bought for pathogens?

Did you design, manufacture, and install the braking system on your car?

Gosh, no, someone else did that. It seems like someone else was responsible for your safety and well-being.

Yet you assert you have no responsibility to the people above (and countless others) who are protecting you from all sorts of possible dangers in the world?

I can only assume the "self-sufficient person" delusion satisfies some powerful psychological need in order for it to persist against very obvious empirical evidence that it's nonsense.
