How much do you pay attention to expiration dates on food items?

Obviously things like meat will spoil pretty quickly if you are going more than a few days past the date stamped on the package.

But what about some other things like salad dressings and condiments?

When do you chuck those?

  • It's a sell-by date, not a use-by date.  I tend to trust my eyes, nose, and common sense.

If they are out of date, out they go.  If it says use by:  I don't play around.    I don't like food poisoning.

Thins like condiments,  and salad dressing, ketchup, mayonnaise, hot sauce, cream cheese, sour cream don't last that long in our home.  We use our noses and common sense before we use anything.

Theose items rarely last past the expiration date.

I do too, but some of this isn't so easy like ketchup or some other product that doesn't readily spoil.

I wish the date on the package was the true SPOIL date.

I sure won't mess with meat and dairy.  I know those things do go bad.  But some of the condiments are questionable.  I am sure I have safely used ketchup that was a year past it's date.

With my darn allergies, I can't smell as well as I used to.  I just sort of wing it.  Milk goes without the sniff test though.  I can't even bare to get a whiff of that if it's gone bad.  Tasting sour milk was enough for me.

Should we experiment and go look inside our fridge to see how old that bottle of hot sauce really is?  I bet I have something in there older than a toddler.

All dairy and meat products get checked and must be good for at least a week.

Nothing lasts much longer then that around here.

If it comes out in chunks instead of streams, you know it's time to throw it out.

I pay attention, but some foods don't need the same vigilance as others.

Some are "best before" dates, which is more of a recommendation, and others are "use by," which means it's highly likely to go off by that date. Milk often goes off well before the date. Heinz tomato ketchup has a high vinegar content, and as vinegar is a natural preservative, should be safe. Other brands of ketchup may have less vinegar, so may not last as well.
