    No, not unless you are specifically eating it for dessert. Then it would be 'a'pudding. So this is contextual. Most of the time a cake is a cake.. unless you are having it FOR pudding. 

    Your understanding of the word, (it has several meanings) is probably different here.... 

    What would be helpful is if you were to explain what you see as a pudding?

    No...we just call cake cake ,but you could ask for cake  for pudding ,desert, sweets or Afters all four words in Engrish means the same thing :)
