Why are unwanted emails called "Spam"?

Why didn't they name them after another Monty Python sketch like "Ethel The Frog"?

Because no one wants or eats Spam....it's just transported around the world and keeps getting recycled until it's just  left dumped is some old storage facility..:(

I'll eat Spam if there's nothing else available to eat. It's better than cheese anyway.

Cheese is the most disgusting, puke-inducing substance ever invented.

"They" are obviously the people who decided that "Spam" was the right word for unwanted emails and not "roast beef". Lol :)

It's not actually referencing Monty Python or canned meat.

The official name is Electronic Specials, Political, or Advertising Mail.
People quickly abbreviated it to eSPAM ... then dropped the "e", and it became SPAM.
